What is interactive fiction?

In interactive fiction, also called text adventures, you explore a story by typing โ€” or saying โ€” what you want to do. The game describes a place; you decide what happens next.

  • A few words go a long way look · examine the lamp (or just tap any word) · take key · go north (or “n”) · inventory
  • Examine everything Clues, exits, and useful items hide in the descriptions — read closely and look at whatever catches your eye.
  • You can’t break it Save anytime, undo a wrong move, and tap the 💡 for a hint when you’re stuck. Some games (like Bronze) even offer a beginner tutorial.

Your data

Lantern runs entirely in your browser. Your saves, maps, notes and settings live on your device and are never uploaded — except where you turn something on below.

  • Feedback you send Goes to a public issue tracker on GitHub, together with recent game text and diagnostic info so the report can be understood. Don’t include anything you wouldn’t post publicly.
  • Voice control Uses your browser’s speech recognition. In Chrome and Safari that means audio is sent to Google or Apple to be transcribed — the same as any other voice input on the web. Lantern never records or stores audio.
  • OpenAI voice Off unless you add your own API key. When on, the game text being narrated is sent to OpenAI to generate audio, billed to your account. Audio is cached on your device.
  • Google Drive sync Off unless you sign in. Lantern asks only for permission to files it creates itself, plus your email address to label the device — it cannot see the rest of your Drive.
  • No tracking No analytics, no advertising, no third-party scripts. Nothing is sent when you simply play.
